5 Things To Look For When Choosing a Stairlift for Your Relative

5 Things To Look For When Choosing a Stairlift for Your Relative | Olympic Stairlift

If you or a relative struggles with walking up and down stairs then having a stairlift installed in your home can make the world of difference to your independence.

A stairlift can particularly help if you suffer from ongoing medical conditions such as arthritis or MS. In addition, a stairlift can offer support if you are recovering from a recent operation or if you just want to feel safe in your home.

There are a variety of aspects to consider when choosing a stairlift. Here are five tips to take into consideration when you are deciding on a stairlift.

1. The House

Curved or unusually shaped staircases can limit the choices of stairlift that can be fitted to your house. However, there are several types of stairlifts available for stairs that curve either at the top or at the bottom.

2. The Size of Your Stairs

The size of your stairs will play a factor in which stairlift you choose. The angle and gradient of your staircase can affect the type of stairlifts available to you. In addition, it is important to take into consideration how much room you need for your knees or feet. If your stairway is very narrow, consider perching or standing lifts.

3. Doorways

Doorways on the landing or at the bottom of the stairs can affect how easily a stairlift is installed. If a stairlift has to travel across a door close you can choose to have a folding rail which will lift up out of the way.

4. Top of Stairs

It is common to have radiators or obstructions at the top of stairs. If this is the case in your house, it is important to ensure that you can move off from the stairlift safely and not bang your knees at the top.

5. Comfortable

A huge element is ensuring your stairlift is comfortable to sit on. It may be easier to choose a stairlift with a platform you stand on or a perching lift if you have stiff limbs or difficulty bending your knees as they will have a small high seat to give support during the ride.
